Body Image Guest Site by a Young Cheerleader:
Young Cheerleader Fights With Body Image - Most of US think that the only ones with body issues are those who are either grossly heavy or anorexic. I'd like to be the first to tell you: that couldn't be further from the truth. As someone who continues to be involved in sports in the age of 8, I 've always been conscious of my need to remain slim.
My first negative encounter in terms of my weight came during my first year as a cheerleader. I was a "flyer" - the person that's lifted / propelled into a stunt. During any of these stuns, my bases made a remark about how heavy I was. Up until that point, I 'd never heard any negative messages associated with the way I looked. I was young at the time so it did not register with me that those girls were potentially exaggerating, or maybe even just whining. All I knew, from that stage on, was that I was heavy - FAT!
Cheerleader And Her Body Image
Puberty was maybe the worst experience of my life. As a young woman's body begins to change shape, most girls definitely start to feel a way of insecurity. No longer was I simply "The Short Skinny Girl Who Weighed More Than She Should". I was now additionally "The Short Skinny Girl with Big Boobs".
It wasn't until I became a dancer that I started to realize that
there was certainly nothing wrong with me. She clarified how folks do not always factor in someone's muscle mass when they assess their weight and that she suffered consequently. I instantly identified with what she was saying. I felt a way of relief knowing that there was a legitimate reason behind my weight: I simply had lots of muscle mass.
Although I'll never forget the experiences of my past, I am conscious of my own power over them.
